How to install a WordPress theme from a ZIP file

You downloaded a WordPress theme as a ZIP file. Here is exactly what to do with it, including what to click, what to expect and how to fix the errors people run into most.

What you need first

  • A WordPress site running version 6.6 or newer (block themes need a recent version).
  • Administrator access to the dashboard.
  • The theme as a .zip file.

Install the theme

  1. Log in to your dashboard and go to Appearance → Themes.
  2. Click Add New Theme, then Upload Theme.
  3. Click Choose File, select the theme ZIP and click Install Now.
  4. When it says the theme installed successfully, click Activate.

Import the demo so your site looks like the preview

Most of our themes include a one-click demo import. Go to Appearance → [Theme name] setup and click Import demo content. It creates the pages, a navigation menu and the front page, and installs the free plugin that comes with the theme. It is safe to run more than once: pages that already exist are skipped.

Change the colors, fonts and layout

Open Appearance → Editor. Under Styles you can switch between the theme’s color styles, change fonts and tweak spacing. Under Patterns → Template parts you can edit the header and footer, such as your phone number and address. To edit a page, open it under Pages and click any text or photo.

Fixing common errors

“The package could not be installed. The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet”

This usually means the ZIP contains another ZIP inside it, or you zipped the wrong folder. Unzip the download on your computer and look for a ZIP file with the theme’s name. Upload that one.

“The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive”

Your host limits upload size. Ask your host to raise it, or upload the unzipped theme folder through your host’s file manager or FTP into wp-content/themes.

“Theme install failed” or a blank screen

Check that your PHP version is 7.4 or newer and that you have enough free disk space. Temporarily switching off security or caching plugins also helps.

The demo import didn’t create pages

Make sure you are logged in as an administrator and that the theme is active, then run the import again from the theme’s setup page.
